A special THANK YOU to the 2010 contestants in the Miss Illinois Teen USA and Miss Illinois USA pageants for their generous coat contributions! Last year contestants donated more than 100 coats to families at the Chicago Christian Industrial League (CCIL). Under the direction of Daryl Schabinger, this year was no different as contestants gathered just as many, if not more, coats. On behalf of CCIL's residents, staff and volunteers, thank you for the warm coats and for thinking of us this holiday season!

Pictured above from left to right: Lorraine Clark, Barry Clark, Rick Roberts, Anna Lloyd and Ron Bernardi

The Northbrook and Deerfield Rotaries helped make the 44th Annual Coat Off Your Back campaign a huge success! Representatives Rick Roberts, CCIL Senior Director of Strategy & Communications, and Anna Lloyd, A Safe Haven, spoke during the Tuesday, November 24, 2009 meeting at Mission Hills Country Club. At least $1,100 was raised at the luncheon and a truck filled with more than 60 bulging bags of clothes was transported to the Chicago Christian Industrial League (CCIL).

Art Wolter from Deerfield and Chet Bloden from Northbrook originally started the Coat Off Your Back campaign 44 years ago. Both were Rotarians and directors of CCIL. The campaign really started to gain momentum the past 11 years under the direction of the late Rotarian Ken Thiel. Thiel set up a number of collection places in various communities and was integral in spreading the word about CCIL. Lorraine Clark, former CCIL Board Member, her husband Barry Clark, Deerfield Rotary and Ronald Bernardi, Northbrook Rotary are now the driving forces behind the campaign.

Charles Ginns, Network 90, was the featured guest on the Chicago Christian Industrial League's (CCIL) weekly CAN TV show, Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. Network 90 is a program at CCIL that offers a 90-day transition from incarceration to community.

Charles encouraged viewers not to “judge” and that sometimes people make mistakes but they can be rehabilitated. He is evidence of this belief stating, “I made poor choices growing up, getting involved with drugs, alcohol and gangs. Jail time was seen as a badge of honor. I know now it’s no road to take. Being incarcerated strips you of your family, your friends, your career, your life.”

Mr. Ginns was referred to CCIL via the Network 90 program. This program provides the link between CCIL to its housing and employment connections with ARAMARK, the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development and many other prominent partners. In 2007, CCIL boasted successful job and home placements for more than 175 individuals. Today, this success rate continues to increase. Incessant follow up is provided ensuring stability and growth.

Recipe for Success - Foodservice Training Program Graduation

On Monday, June 29, 2009 trainees from CCIL's Foodservice Training Program were honored at a graduation ceremony in CCIL's chapel. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White took time out of his busy schedule to attend the ceremony offering words of encouragement to the graduates. After the ceremony, Mr. White stayed for lunch and mingled with the graduates, guests, CCIL residents and staff.

The graduates, Michael Allen, Tiesha Glaze, Michael Hatcher, Christine Johnson, Michael Newson, Jeffrey Patton, Priscilla Reilly, Robert Robinson, Jeff Salone, Sheila Salone, Craig Sanderson, Tishawn Williams and Delores Wright shared their compelling stories and future goals. Graduation ceremony speakers included Ron Archie, CCIL Interim Executive Director, Ginger Knowles, ARAMARK General Manager, Bob Joens, ARAMARK Instructor, and Lisa Dieterle, CCIL Center for Workforce Development.

About the Foodservice Training Program...
CCIL, Aramark and the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development (MOWD) have found the recipe for successfully helping individuals turn their lives around – a foodservice training program targeting non-violent ex-felons. In partnership with Aramark, CCIL created a nine week foodservice training class. Since its inception in February 2006, the foodservice training program has been stirring up excellent results by helping people secure jobs in the foodservice industry.

The Process:
Applicants express an interest in the foodservice industry and apply for the program;
Applicants are evaluated by CCIL case managers;
Professional interviews are conducted by CCIL and Aramark instructors;
Nine week training program begins;
Foodservice examination administered;
Graduation upon completing the program;
Job placement

Upon passing the exam, students become certified with the National Restaurant Association which also makes them eligible for certification with the State of Illinois and City of Chicago. These essential credentials make students more marketable for employment.

Just Like Me and You

Children in grades 3rd – 5th at Chalmers Elementary School, located across the street from CCIL, focused their service learning project on homelessness this spring. Upon visiting CCIL, the students learned first-hand about the issue. Compelled and motivated by their CCIL experience, the students thought about various ways they could help. In partnership with America SCORES Chicago, the girls’ team presented the poem below.

Just Like Me and You
America SCORES Chicago
Chalmers 3rd - 5th Grade Girls Team

Help the homeless,
Yeah, that’s what we said.
You can’t treat them like garbage
just because they don’t have a roof over their head.

CCIL (repeat x4)

Homelessness can happen to anyone,
it could happen to you.
We’re the Chalmers Cavaliers
here to tell you what you can do.

Donate money.
Volunteer your time.
Read books to kids.
Write a poem.
Draw pictures for the families.
Cook a meal.
Shake their hand.
Smile and laugh.

Don’t be afraid to reach out your hand.
We need to understand
the lesson that we planned.

CCIL (repeat x4)

They might need a friend.
The CCIL knows what to do.
Think about how we can help.
Homeless people have talents too.

At first we felt sad
because we didn’t know what to do.
Now we understand that they are families,
just like me and you.

Happiness comes from who we are
not from what we have.
So do something to make a difference,
and you will feel glad.

The Rush Med-Ped’s Department presented a “CCIL Day of Service” on Monday, March 30., 2009. Twenty-two doctors in residency volunteered their time at a health fair for CCIL residents that included height and weight checks, blood pressure readings, blood sugar checks, and vision and hearing tests.

Also included in the “Day of Service” were salon services including makeup and nail care, hair styling and massages. Activities for CCIL’s children took place in the cafeteria where the kids learned that eating healthy can taste great! They were able to make their own smoothie and decorate lunch bags for school.

A Nintendo Wii was brought onsite to display new techniques in personal fitness. CCIL residents had fun bowling, hitting homeruns and playing tennis.

The Med-Peds spent the afternoon learning about community service and the ways CCIL handles healthcare. Greg Cox, CCIL Intake Coordinator, talked to students about the experience of a CCIL resident and the unique healthcare concerns these individuals may have.

The Rush Med-Ped department is unique in that the doctors are trained for both adult internal medicine as well as pediatric care.

Those representing CCIL on, and alongside, the float included: Alderman JoAnn Thompson, Kathy Fink, Ron Archie, Rick Roberts and Jenny Brandhorst.

The parade was viewed locally on ABC7 where ASH and CCIL were mentioned. ASH posted an incredible video of the event on YouTube.

Dodge Ram Convoy and Cans Benefit CCIL

After three days of collecting canned food from the Chrysler LLC sponsored Chicago Auto Show Food Drive, a caravan of Dodge Rams delivered more than 20,000 pounds of food from the show to CCIL. More than 20 student volunteers from John Hancock High School helped unload the canned food and stocked CCIL’s Community Food Pantry which feeds at least 250 families every week.

“Every year at Chicago Auto Show, we try to showcase the character of Chrysler not just the great cars and trucks we build. Chrysler is an American company that is dedicated to providing good American jobs and serving the communities in which we live and work,” said Lewis Scott, Director of Chrysler’s Midwest Business Center. “We are so proud to continue our partnership with the Christian Industrial League and the great work they do everyday to feed the people of Chicago.”

CCIL is a century-old organization that restores families and individuals affected by poverty and homelessness by providing comprehensive programs and services empowering people to transform their lives and strengthen the community.

“During these tough economic times, we’re so thankful for Chrysler’s generous sponsorship at the Chicago Auto Show. Every week CCIL’s Community Food Pantry serves more than 250 disadvantaged families. This wouldn’t be possible without the kindhearted charitable contributions from our loyal supporters and community partnerships,” said Jenny Brandhorst, CCIL Communications Manager.

Chicago Cares Celebration of Service

Each year Chicago Cares sends thousands of volunteers throughout the city to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr’s memory. This year, 17 volunteers spent their Saturday at CCIL participating in the Chicago Cares Celebration of Service.

Children in CCIL’s family program were treated to an “Around the World” multicultural fair meant to further Dr. King’s vision of a Beloved Community. The children made a craft or learned a game from seven different countries. Japanese origami and Guatemalan “worry dolls” were two of the children’s favorites.

CCIL Volunteer Coordinator Chris Wiens comments, “The kids had a wonderful time learning about different cultures. They now have a common interest with children from all over the world, whether it is origami or mancala. It’s the start we need to find a common humanity in our overseas neighbors and an important lesson for us to remember at home as well.”

KIPP Ascend Charter School donates canned goods

On Thursday, January 15, KIPP Ascend Charter School donated more than 2,000 canned goods to CCIL’s Community Food Pantry. On one of the coldest days of the year, the students bundled up to help CCIL volunteers load all of the food items. The donation will help feed at least 1,300 struggling families who receive aide from CCIL’s Community Food Pantry.

“The spirit of service demonstrated in the student’s willingness to help us load the food was inspiring. They should be proud of their efforts to help out struggling Chicago families. It was obvious they wanted to carry this project through to the end and would not be satisfied or warm until each and every canned good was put in our van,” said Chris Wiens,
CCIL Volunteer Coordinator.
