Rush Day of Service at CCIL

The Rush Med-Ped’s Department presented a “CCIL Day of Service” on Monday, March 30., 2009. Twenty-two doctors in residency volunteered their time at a health fair for CCIL residents that included height and weight checks, blood pressure readings, blood sugar checks, and vision and hearing tests.

Also included in the “Day of Service” were salon services including makeup and nail care, hair styling and massages. Activities for CCIL’s children took place in the cafeteria where the kids learned that eating healthy can taste great! They were able to make their own smoothie and decorate lunch bags for school.

A Nintendo Wii was brought onsite to display new techniques in personal fitness. CCIL residents had fun bowling, hitting homeruns and playing tennis.

The Med-Peds spent the afternoon learning about community service and the ways CCIL handles healthcare. Greg Cox, CCIL Intake Coordinator, talked to students about the experience of a CCIL resident and the unique healthcare concerns these individuals may have.

The Rush Med-Ped department is unique in that the doctors are trained for both adult internal medicine as well as pediatric care.

CCIL & ASH Participation St. Patrick's Day Parade a Success

CCIL’s participation in the downtown St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 14, 2009 would not have been possible without the friendship, support and sponsorship provided by A Safe Haven (ASH). More than 20 people dressed in green from CCIL and ASH gathered alongside the float. The camaraderie before, during and after the parade was amazing! Those representing CCIL on, and alongside, the float included: Alderman JoAnn Thompson, Kathy Fink, Ron Archie, Rick Roberts and Jenny Brandhorst.

The parade was viewed locally on ABC7 where ASH and CCIL were mentioned. ASH posted an incredible video of the event on YouTube.

Dodge Ram Convoy and Cans Benefit CCIL

After three days of collecting canned food from the Chrysler LLC sponsored Chicago Auto Show Food Drive, a caravan of Dodge Rams delivered more than 20,000 pounds of food from the show to CCIL. More than 20 student volunteers from John Hancock High School helped unload the canned food and stocked CCIL’s Community Food Pantry which feeds at least 250 families every week.

“Every year at Chicago Auto Show, we try to showcase the character of Chrysler not just the great cars and trucks we build. Chrysler is an American company that is dedicated to providing good American jobs and serving the communities in which we live and work,” said Lewis Scott, Director of Chrysler’s Midwest Business Center. “We are so proud to continue our partnership with the Christian Industrial League and the great work they do everyday to feed the people of Chicago.”

CCIL is a century-old organization that restores families and individuals affected by poverty and homelessness by providing comprehensive programs and services empowering people to transform their lives and strengthen the community.

“During these tough economic times, we’re so thankful for Chrysler’s generous sponsorship at the Chicago Auto Show. Every week CCIL’s Community Food Pantry serves more than 250 disadvantaged families. This wouldn’t be possible without the kindhearted charitable contributions from our loyal supporters and community partnerships,” said Jenny Brandhorst, CCIL Communications Manager.
